Insulated steel
The practical all-rounder. Steel takes paint and embossing well enough to pass for timber at three metres, and insulated cores make the garage usable in February.
Steel resists the wet better than anything else here, does not swell or move with the seasons, and needs almost nothing from you. Insulated cores add rigidity as well as warmth, which is why an insulated door usually sounds quieter than an uninsulated one of the same size.
Modern embossed and overlay finishes read as real timber from the street and keep doing it a decade later. On a house where wood is the right look but the exposure is brutal, this is usually the honest recommendation.

R-value matters if the garage is attached, heated, or has a bedroom over it. For a detached cold store it is largely wasted money and we will say so.
It can, but modern insulated doors are considerably stiffer than the single-skin doors people remember. A basketball will not mark one.

From the street, yes. Up close a joiner would know. Most people find that trade perfectly acceptable given the maintenance difference.
